Suppose you’re shopping for a new midsize pickup truck in Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle, Radivlle, or Regina, and you think the only difference between the 2023 GMC Canyon and its closely-related GM sibling is the branding. In that case, it’s time to think again. The all-new 2023 GMC Canyon goes in a different direction this time, with a stronger emphasis than ever on the off-road capability of this outstanding truck. If you want a truck smaller than a full-size truck but one that doesn’t compromise on style and capability, it’s time to take a closer look at the all-new GMC Canyon.
If you weren’t already aware of the move towards a stronger emphasis on off-road capability for the 2023 GMC Canyon, you would be as soon as you see it. The all-new Canyon has a more upright stance and greater ground clearance than its predecessors, especially in its AT4X guise. The AT4X features a factory lift of 3.0 inches that delivers a total ground clearance of 10.7 inches.
There are plenty of other reasons why the AT4X looks like such a serious off-roader, but all versions of the new Canyon look the part. The front fascia is modern and aggressive, with very on-point slim LED headlights and a massive grille. The new Canyon looks imposing in all its configurations, and even if you never actually go off-road, you always look pretty cool while doing whatever it is you do in your Canyon.
Trucks are notorious these days for being offered in an almost unlimited number of trim levels, specifications, and configurations. The 2023 GMC Canyon offers all the choices you need, but the lineup is simplified to concentrate on the configurations people actually want and tend to buy. The simplification of the lineup translates to the new Canyon now being available in four trim levels: Elevation, AT4, AT4X, AT4X Edition 1 Package, and Denali. On top of that, the new GMC Canyon is now only available as a crew cab with a 5-foot-2 bed, and all models feature a 2.7-litre turbo-four engine.
All versions of the 2023 GMC Canyon come with a 2.7-litre turbo-four engine with Active Fuel Management and Stop/Start that also powers the Canyon’s GM stablemate. However, while that model has three different tunings, the GMC Canyon gets the most powerful High Output version under the hood of every trim level. The powerplant puts out 310 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque, which goes to the front or all four wheels through a new iteration of the eight-speed automatic transmission with quicker downshifts than the previous version.
With the output being best-in-class for a midsize pickup truck, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Canyon also boasts a best-in-class maximum available towing capacity of up to 3,493 kg (7,700 pounds). The AT4X can tow up to 2,722 kg (6,000 pounds), and the AT4X Edition 1 Package can tow 2,495 kg (5,500 pounds). Elevation models are standard rear-wheel-drive with four-wheel-drive available, but all other trim levels are standard four-wheel-drive.
