The Chevrolet Colorado has long been the first choice for many of those shopping for a midsize pickup truck, but the all-new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado sets the standard for the segment at a new high level. If you live in Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle, Radville, or Regina and you’re in the market for a new pickup truck, if a full-size is too much truck for your needs, the 2023 Colorado could be precisely what you need. There’s no denying that competition is growing in the midsize truck segment, but Chevrolet has undoubtedly risen to the challenge with the new, third-generation Colorado.
The Chevy Colorado was already a great-looking truck capable of fulfilling various roles and applications, so the changes to the exterior styling are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It’s instantly identifiable as a Colorado, but that’s no bad thing. The headlights are a little thinner, and a ridge down the hood dips towards the lights. The overall look is sporty and aggressive, but to different degrees depending on the trim level.
There are five trim levels available in the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado lineup. The range starts with fleet-focused WT, as ever, but retail buyers will start at the LT and then look to the Trail Boss, Z71, and fabulous range-topping ZR2.
If you’re one of those who get a little confused with different truck cabs and bed lengths, Chevrolet makes it as simple as possible with the all-new 2023 Colorado. That’s because all five trim levels come in the same basic configuration: a crew cab with a short bed and a single engine throughout the lineup. Some might think sticking with a standard configuration limits choice, but it makes complete sense in an increasingly competitive market as this configuration has always accounted for the overwhelming majority of sales. On the other hand, the five trim levels are quite distinct, offering a different take on how owners might use the truck and how they want to look while they’re doing their business.
The engine powering the c is a 2.7-litre turbo-four that puts out 237 horsepower and 259 lb.-ft. of torque in its standard form. However, the Trail Boss and ZR1 trim levels get a Turbo Plus version tuned to develop 310 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. The ZR2 gets a high-output version with an extra 40 lb.-ft. of available torque. In all cases, the power goes to the wheels through a new eight-speed automatic transmission with quicker downshifts than its predecessor.
Depending on which model you choose, up to five different driving modes are available for negotiating all types of surfaces and applications. The five modes are Normal, Tow/Haul, Baja, Terrain, and Off-Road, and Tow/Haul delivers impressive midsize capability when towing up to the Chevy Colorado’s limit of 3,493 kg (7,700 pounds).
Of course, midsize trucks are often bought as a replacement or as an alternative to an SUV or sedan, so Chevy has packed the Colorado with standard features you’d expect to find in those vehicles. However, off-road capability is a focus for most models that Canadian buyers are likely to prefer. The Z71 comes with the Turbo Plus engine, 18-inch full-gloss Dark Android painted aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires, an automatic locking rear differential, and hill descent control. And the ZR2 goes even further with a high-performance 3-inch lifted suspension and 3-inch wider chassis, an off-road performance display, electronic locking front and rear differentials, and all five drive modes that include Baja.
