The 2022 GMC Canyon is a midsize pickup truck perfect for a wide variety of people and a range of applications, not just those where a truck is always the obvious choice. Which means it appeals to a vast audience. Canyon certainly checks the box if you want to look cool driving around Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle, Radville, and Regina, but it can also rise to just about any task where a sedan, hatch, or SUV might be the predictable choice. As long as five seats are as much as you need, the 2022 GMC Colorado can probably be configured to any vehicle you want or need it to be.
Midsize trucks like the 2022 GMC Canyon don’t usually offer as many configurations and specification options as their full-size equivalents, but the Canyon comes closer than most. There is a strong emphasis on four-wheel-drive models with more options than rear-drive versions. Rear-drive versions of the Canyon come in Elevation and Elevation Standard trim levels, and you can have these in both Extended Cab and Crew Cab body styles. Those two trim levels are also available in four-wheel drive format, but AT4, AT4 Leather, and Denali trim levels also open up to you if you want a four-wheel-drive pickup truck.
If you decide you must have an Extended Cab with a four-wheel-drive, that combination is only available with the Elevation trim level; the rest of the four-wheel-drive models are exclusively Crew Cabs, but they do still offer a choice between long (6-foot) and short (5-foot) boxes.
In Canada, GMC has dropped the fleet-focused four-cylinder engine, so the standard powerplant for the 2022 GMC Canyon is the 3.6-litre gas V-6 that provides the truck with 308 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. That substantial amount of power for a mid-size truck gets sent to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, but if a lot of towing towards the limits of mid-size capability or a lot of highway driving is on your agenda, the optional engine for the Canyon might be the better choice.
That optional powerplant is a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder that produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, and this engine comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2022 GMC Canyon has a maximum towing capacity of 3,493kg (7,700 pounds) when correctly specified with the turbodiesel engine. However, with the standard V-6, the Canyon can still manage to tow up to 3,175kg (7,000 pounds).
Elevation versions of the Canyon appeal to the budget-conscious and fleets, but most retail buyers will probably want the off-road-focused AT4 models or the incredibly stylish and very generously-equipped Denali versions of the Canyon. There are more differences between the AT4 Cloth and AT4 Leather trim levels than just the seat covering material. As well as the upgrade to leather seats, the AT4 Leather also comes standard with a 4-way power front passenger seat, a 4.2-inch diagonal colour Driver Information Centre, HD Radio, an HD rear vision camera, a heated steering wheel, and rear park assist.
Denali models feature almost everything but the kitchen sink. Standard equipment includes 20-inch alloys, lashings of exterior chrome, the Driver Alert Package, a seven-speaker Bose premium audio system, and an 8.0-inch diagonal GMC Infotainment System with Navigation and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. And although the standard specification is pretty spectacular, you can go even further with the new Denali Black Edition Package that adds 20-inch aluminum, low gloss Black wheels with a Black GMC logo; Black 5.0-inch rectangular assist steps; GMC Black chrome exhaust tip; and premium all-weather floor liners.
If a full-size truck is a little too much truck for your driveway, garage, or your wallet, the 2022 GMC Canyon is a superb pickup truck that can do just about anything you might expect a sedan, hatch, or SUV to do normally. Especially in its ZR2 form, the Canyon is one of those vehicles you’ll look back at admiringly as you walk away from it, but the Canyon is as much about substance as it is about style.
