A lot of column inches on car websites and in automotive publications are often dedicated to high-end, high-priced supercars, but it’s the bread and butter, mass-market models that really matter to most automakers and the majority of buyers. The Chevy Spark is one of the most affordable new cars you can buy right now, but this little car has an awful lot more going for it than just a very attractive retail price.
There’s no getting away from the fact the Spark is a pretty small car but it shouldn’t be overlooked through assuming it’s too small to be practical, because that’s definitely not the case. It may only be 3,635mm long, 1,595mm wide and 1,493mm tall, but there’s 1,059mm of legroom in the front seats and a generous 838mm in the back.
The four-seat Spark has 314 litres of cargo volume with all the seats in place, but when the rear seats are not needed for passengers they can be folded down to reveal a very usable 770 litres of cargo space.
When it comes to trim levels, the lineup is almost as compact as the car itself. The entry-level model is the LS, the mid-range option is the 1LT, and the top-of-the-range Spark model is the 2LT.
A car like the Spark isn’t going to be entering any drag races as it’s designed very much with the urban jungle in mind as a sensible, nimble and economical runabout. The engine under the hood of all three versions of the 2022 Chevrolet Spark is therefore an entirely appropriate 1.4-litre inline-four. This plucky little engine develops 98 horsepower and 84 lb.-ft. of torque, which comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a CVT transmission sending power to the front wheels.
On the Chevrolet Canada website, the different transmission can make it look like there are actually five trim levels, but that’s not really the case. The entry-level LS and the midrange 1LT models get the five-speed manual transmission as part of their standard specification, but both of these trim levels can be upgraded to the CVT if you prefer.
When it comes to the 2LT, however, the range-topper comes standard with the CVT so the manual isn’t an option at the top level, but the CVT does help deliver an estimated fuel economy rating of 6.2 L/100km on the highway.
Just because the Spark is a small car with extremely competitive pricing doesn’t mean that Chevy has stripped it of features and equipment to get it down to such a low price. The 2022 is actually very nicely equipped at the entry-level, and equipment levels at the top of the range are positively generous.
Even the LS comes standard with a rear vision camera, 10 airbags, a rear spoiler, the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control, hill-start assist, tire pressure monitors and the Chevrolet 3 infotainment system. The infotainment system features a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, Siri Eyes Free control, 2 USB ports and a built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
At the other end of the spectrum, the 2LT comes with air conditioning, heated front seats, leatherette seating surfaces, 15-inch alloys wheels, a power sunroof, remote keyless entry, and several advanced safety features such as forward collision alert and lane departure warning.
