The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is a midsize pickup truck that can fulfill various roles, which means it appeals to a vast audience. The Colorado is the perfect solution if you want a cool-looking truck to cruise around Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle, Radville, and Regina, but you don’t fancy the size and price of a full-size model. However, it can also perform any tasks that you might typically do with a sedan, hatch, or SUV. As long as five seats are enough for you, the 2022 GMC Colorado can pretty much do anything you want or need it to do.
The list of available 2022 Chevrolet Colorado trim levels is as relatively compact as the truck itself, especially if you’ve looked at configuring a full-size truck in the past. Despite there being just four available trim levels, the Colorado can be configured in several different ways to build anything from a no-nonsense work truck to a luxurious cruiser and anything in between. The 2022 lineup starts with the WT (Work Truck), and after that, you have the LT, Z71, and finally, range-topping, off-road-focused ZR2.
That’s not the end of the important choices you have to make at this point, however, as there are also a few different body and bed configurations to select from. Three different cab/box combinations are available: the extended cab with a long box and the crew cab models with either a short box or the long box. All three combinations are available for WT, LT, and Z71 trim levels in four-wheel-drive format, but if you decide you want a rear-drive version of the Colorado Z71, you can only have that as a crew cab with the short box. The range-topping ZR2 can be configured as an extended cab with a long box or a crew cab model with a short box.
Even though there are a limited number of trim levels compared to full-size trucks, the 2022 Chevy Colorado more than makes up for that by having three different engines to choose from. The base engine is a 2.5-litre four-pot with 200 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque that comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, but if you want four-wheel drive, you’ll have to go with the next engine in the lineup. That engine is a 3.6 V-6 that puts out 308 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque that goes to all four wheels of the Colorado through a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, and this is the unit you’ll find in the vast majority of 2022 model year Colorado models.
The trio of engine options is completed by a four-cylinder 2.8-litre Duramax turbodiesel that provides the truck with 181 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. This combination offers a maximum towing capacity of 3,492 kg (7,700 pounds), compared to 1,588 kilograms (3,500 pounds) with the base four-cylinder engine. But if diesel isn’t your thing, the most popular 3.6-litre gas-powered V-6 comes pretty close to the diesel with a very useful maximum towing capacity of 3,175 kg (7,000 pounds).
The standard features of the Z71 make it look like a very tempting proposition. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloys, body-colour exterior styling, the excellent EZ-Lift tailgate, front fog lamps, a remote locking tailgate, a six-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus System with an 8.0-inch HD colour touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Of course, the Colorado ZR2 is probably the coolest-looking model in the family, and it’s also the one to choose if serious off-roading is what you have in mind. The adventure truck exterior styling certainly isn’t just for show because the ZR2 walks the walk with front and rear locking differentials, a 2.0-inch suspension lift, a 3.5-inch wider track than other versions, and adaptive spool valve dampers that really do make this a serious proposition for off-road adventures. And you can further enhance the off-road capability with the optional Bison package that includes additional skid plates, some smart 17-inch black wheels, fender flares, AEV front and rear bumpers, a winch, recovery points, and all the ZR2 badging you could ask for.
The starting point for the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is that it’s a very cool-looking truck, especially in its ZR2 form. But the Colorado is as much about substance as it is about style.
