It’s not every day that a large, three-row SUV like the GMC Yukon gets a full redesign from the ground up, so the arrival of the all-new fifth-generation 2021 Yukon is a pretty big deal for the GMC brand. And if you thought the previous Yukon was a big, capable SUV that was great for hauling a family and all their stuff around, this new model takes all that to an entirely new level.
At a time when a lot of vehicles and their engines seem to be getting smaller, the 2021 GMC Yukon has gone in entirely the other direction and it’s also hard to think of a time when this model has appeared quite as different from its Chevy Tahoe stablemate as it does now.
This new Yukon probably borrows from the styling of the Sierra pickup truck it shares a platform with even more than the Chevy Tahoe does from the Silverado. Different trim levels of the Yukon get slightly different front fascias, but they all look sensational.
Denali models inevitably go big on chrome, while a new AT4 version goes down a more blacked-out styling theme to fit in with its personality of being a more off-road focused model than the opulent Denali. The overall look is more modern and more aerodynamic than Yukons of the past, and it really is hard to criticise what GMC has done with the Yukon this time around.
You only have to look at the new Yukon to realize there’s no place here for any of those smaller displacement turbocharged powerplants that some automakers are going for these days, so it’s really a case of business as usual under the hood of this new Yukon. You may be able to have a six-cylinder Yukon in the future if you prefer, but that would be with the turbodiesel that’s set to arrive somewhere down the line.
The standard engine will, therefore, be a familiar 5.3-litre gas-powered V-8 rated at 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, and that not-inconsiderable amount of power is then sent to the rear or all four wheels through a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
If that’s not enough for you there’s also the option of a 6.2-litre V-8, which is standard if you go for the all-singing, all-dancing Yukon Denali range-topper. This impressive powerplant puts 420 horsepower and a huge 460 lb.-ft. of torque at the Yukon’s disposal, and it comes mated to the same excellent 10-speed automatic transmission as the 5.3-litre unit.
A 277 horsepower 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel is set to arrive at some point and the main reason for considering that one will be the massive 460 lb.-ft. of torque-fuelled capability that it’s said to offer.
GMC has decided to go with four trim levels of Yukon, to begin with for the 2021 model year, which for the first time includes a very desirable, off-road focused AT4 trim level. The lineup therefore consists of the entry-level SLE, the SLT, AT4 and the top-of-the-range Denali.
While the AT4 goes with macho styling and additional off-road components, the Denali goes for all-out luxury with hand-stitched leather and all the comforts you can think of. However, the SLT looks like a great option for many buyers as it covers all the main bases with standard features such as leather upholstery, front seats that are both heated and ventilated, a set of very stylish 20-inch alloys wheels, a power rear liftgate and an extensive suite of driver-assistance features.
This all-new Yukon is now bigger and even more spacious inside than it was already, and all models even come with an equally large 10-inch touchscreen for controlling the infotainment that suits the new dimensions of this imposing and extremely capable vehicle.
If you’re shopping for a large, family-friendly, ultra-capable SUV that has all the style and swagger of a high-end luxury model but is priced much more accessibly, you’ll have to go a long way to beat the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon.
