The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size light-duty pickup truck that delivers all the versatility and capability you’d want and need for a truck in this class, but it also brings an extra element of style and presence to the party that rivals struggle to match.
For the new model year, the Sierra 1500 gets quite a few updates and changes, but these changes relate to things like new colours, new wheel availability, new standard features and changes to the various upgrade packages. The trim levels, engines and the design of the truck have not been updated for 2021.
Buyers therefore have six trim levels to choose from in the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 family, which start with the entry-level base Sierra and then go to the SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4 and the range-topping and fabulously opulent Denali.
Of course, the trim levels are just the start of you putting together the Sierra 1500 that’s right for you as there are also five engines, three transmissions, three bed and three cab options to choose from as a well as rear and all-wheel-drive. You then have to consider things like exterior colours, interiors, wheels, optional extras, and a great selection of upgrade packages to build the perfect light-duty pickup for your specific requirements.
Your eyes and ears do not deceive you; there really is a four-cylinder engine option for the GMC Sierra, and it’s not even the engine with the least power available here. The engine lineup kicks off with a 4.3-litre V-6 that develops 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque, but the four-cylinder is a step up from that as it’s a turbocharged unit that then gives the Sierra 310 horsepower and 348 lb.-ft. of torque to play with.
If you’re serious about towing with your 2021 Sierra 1500, which most truck buyers are, you’ll probably want one the great V-8s under the hood of your truck instead. The first of the V-8 options is a 5.3-litre block that delivers 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque and comes mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Next up is a 6.2-litre V-8 which then provides an impressive 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque and also comes mated to that 10-speed automatic transmission. That’s not the end of the story though as there’s also a diesel powerplant to consider too. The oil-burner is a 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel, which some say is the most refined and quietest of the available engines and is definitely the thriftiest with a reported highway fuel economy rating as good as 8.3 L/100km.
When correctly specified and equipped, the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 is rated to tow a maximum of 5,534kg and the maximum payload rating is 970kg. Regardless of what you want your truck to do for you though, you can rest assured that the features and equipment you need to build your perfect pickup truck are there to be had and it’s entirely possible that no two trucks would ever need to leave the factory specified exactly the same.
The very minimum specification you get with a 2021 Sierra 1500 includes standard power features, air conditioning, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a USB port, 17-inch wheels, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. Base Sierra 1500 trucks are primarily aimed at the workplace, so most retail shoppers will probably overlook the base model and start with the SLE or higher.
SLT models look like the best-value option with a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, 18-inch alloys, automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, a seriously cool tailgate capable of opening six different ways and a high-definition rearview camera. You can even add such luxury features as cooled front seats, navigation, wireless smartphone chargers, heated rear seats and towing and trailering packages without having to go for a higher trim level.
You could sit and pour over brochures and specification sheets for days trying to choose what you want and need in your new Sierra 1500, but the best way to get started is to get yourself behind the wheel for a test drive and then take it from there.
